David Jon Spengler

David Jon Spengler, age 90, of Madison, WI, passed away peacefully on Feb. 05, 2025, at the VA Hospital in Madison. He was born June 9, 1934, in Winnebago County, WI., the son of Silas (Chum) and Margaret (MarMar) Spengler. After graduating from Wayland Academy in Beaver Dam, WI, David attended UW Madison, during which time he enlisted in the US Navy where he proudly served in Okinawa, Japan. Upon returning from his Service, he earned his master’s degree in economics from the UW. After graduating he enjoyed a successful career in Banking and before retiring, he served for several years as the First Fundraiser for the Athletic Department for his beloved Alma Mater. He built many lifelong friendships with athletes and their families while helping recruit future Badgers to the Football Team.

David was part of many organizations throughout his lifetime, including Wayland Academy Board of Trustees, Ducks Unlimited; Chicagoland, Mendota Gridiron Club, Life Member of the UW Alumni Association, American Bankers Association and was a Founding Member of the Midwest Decoy Collectors Association (now the N.A.D.C.A.). He was a proud member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Madison.

David enjoyed hunting, fishing, crossword puzzles and all UW Sports. He enjoyed spending time with his son Erik traveling to several antique decoy and fishing shows every year. He enjoyed spending time with his daughter Heidi driving in the country enjoying nature. He cherished time with each of his 7 grandchildren and was always a source of inspiration and unwavering support.

He is survived by 3 children; Erik (Sharon) Spengler, Heidi (Mark) Kluis and Dave (Becky) Spengler, and his 7 beloved grandchildren; Emily and Jon Spengler, Kyle Kluis and Abbie (Cole) Ragsdale, David (Haley), Michael and Andrew Spengler. He is also survived by his former wife Margaret (Peggy)Spengler along with extended family.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Silas L. and Margaret I. Spengler, brothers William and Silas and sister Susan.

A celebration of life will be held on Friday, February 14th, 2025 at Bethel Lutheran Church, 312 Wisconsin Avenue, Madison, WI. Visitation will be from 10:00am -11:15am with a service to follow at 11:30am. Burial will be held at Lutheran East Cemetery, 200 CTY HWY N, Stoughton, WI immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bethel Lutheran Church and the VA Hospital of Madison.

Erik and Heidi would like to extend their gratitude to their families for their tremendous support. We would also like to thank the VA Hospital doctors and nurses who cared for our father with tremendous compassion. A very special thanks to Dr. Sabina Agrawal whose dedication to his health will forever be appreciated. Dad considered her his ‘angel on earth’.
