David Remitz

October 7, 1956 — February 21, 2015

Madison - David John Remitz, age 58, passed away at University of Wisconsin Hospital on February 21, 2015 from end stage liver disease.

Dave was born on October 7, 1956 in Madison to Florian and Lois Remitz (both deceased). He attended Crestwood Elementary, James Madison Memorial High School (class of 1974) and MATC, earning an associate's degree in commercial/graphic art. Dave worked most of his adult life in sales for various signage/graphic companies in both Madison and Austin, Texas.

He was active and fun-loving and found special enjoyment while golfing with friends, cross country skiing, bicycling and tinkering with cars. He was also an avid Badger football and hockey fan.

Anyone who knew Dave knew his two true loves were his dogs and music. His life-long passion for music began at an early age. He learned to play both the upright and electric bass and was a natural musician. In his youth he was a member of the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra and the MATC jazz band. Over the years Dave played with numerous wonderfully talented musicians in Madison as well as in Austin, where he resided for many years. Dave was adept in many genres but his true love was playing the blues. In 2006, Dave moved back to Madison and reconnected with many old friends and other gifted musicians.

Dave was a sweet, gentle and kind person who possessed the sensitive soul of an artist. He was always willing to help out friends, family and even complete strangers when needed.

Dave's family extends special thanks to his friends for their love and support during his last few months - your many kindnesses to Dave and his family are most appreciated. The family also wishes to express a sincere thank you to the caring doctors and nurses at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and St. Mary's.

Dave will be deeply missed by his sister, Kate Barber of Madison, his brother Jim (Betty) Remitz of Coeur D'Alene, Idaho, and his stepmother, Bonnie Remitz of Cross Plains.

It was Dave's wish that there would be no formal service of his passing. His friends and fellow musicians will hold a musical celebration of his life on April 12, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. at the Knuckle Down Saloon, 2513 Seiferth Road, Madison, Wisconsin.
