Waunakee/Springfield-David K. Holmes, age 96, passed away on June 24, 2023, with family at his side. Born on September 12, 1926, in Two Rivers, Wisconsin to Warren and Margaret (Schumacher) Holmes, Dave was the oldest of 6 children. Dave eventually settled in the Middleton, Wisconsin area, after serving with the Army Medical Corps at Tilton General Hospital, Fort Dix, NJ.
On August 23, 1952, he married the love of his life, Margaret Pertzborn, at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Martinsville, Wisconsin. Together they created a beautiful life. From the ground up, Dave built the home they shared for 61 years and where they raised their two sons, Paul and Tim. Building and maintaining became a passion of Dave’s and over the years there wasn’t anything he didn’t learn to do with his own hands. He also took immaculate care of his property, rivaling others with the straight lines in the lawn, perfectly trimmed shrubs, and beautiful flower and vegetable gardens.
Dave was an active member at St Martin’s Catholic Church, always enriching the lives of those around him and sharing that infectious smile. Employed for over 30 years at Fish Building Supply, Dave took pride in helping his customers until celebrating retirement in the early 1990’s.
Dave was a bright light in his family and his community. He was personable, friendly, and joyful with all that he did. He loved golfing with family and friends. He participated in many golf leagues over the years, golfed well into his 90s, and recently completed a 4 generation round of golf. He was also an avid boater and a member of the Madison Power Squadron in the 1960s. However, his biggest love of all was being with his family, chatting about his latest project, invention or hobby, or helping others with projects of their own.
In October of 2019, Dave was selected to participate in the Badger Honor Flight to our nation’s Capital to visit the war memorials. This was an incredible honor and a highlight of his life to experience the awe, respect, and gratitude within these massive tributes, and have the same bestowed upon him as a veteran.
Dave is survived by his wife of nearly 71 years, Margaret; two sons, Paul (Joni) Holmes and Tim (Jean) Holmes; two granddaughters, Elizabeth (Brian) Seubert and Katherine (Eric) Hartkopf; four great-grandchildren, Collin and Dylan Seubert, Josephine and Cecilia Hartkopf; two sisters, Dolores (Raphael) Sutter and Virginia Oldenburg. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William Holmes; sisters, Carol Sutter and Diane Devine. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Martin’s Catholic Church, Martinsville, Wisconsin on Saturday, July 1, 2023, at 11:00am. Visitation will take place prior to the mass starting at 9:30am.
