David Devinney

July 24, 1929 — November 4, 2013

Sun Prairie - David Samuel DeVinney, age 84, died peacefully, in his sleep at home on November 4, 2013. He was born and raised in Columbus, WI, the son of Fred Hunter DeVinney and Cesarine Smiley.
He excelled in basketball, golf and track in high school and remained a sports enthusiast for the rest of his life. He loved his Badgers, Packers and Sun Prairie Cardinals and watched and attended many games throughout the years. He attended the U.W. Madison, was a member of the Chi Psi Fraternity and met and married his college sweetheart, Susan, who became the love of his life. He always made an effort to connect with others and went on to work in human relations at Wisconsin Power and Light, where he used his gift for relating to people. After retirement he enjoyed many years of golf in Wisconsin and Florida. David strongly believed that it was important to pay your civic rent and volunteered his time with various organizations. He started and served as president for the first Jaycee chapter in Sun Prairie, served on the board for the United Way, was on the parks and recreation board and a member of the Lion's Club for 39 years, participated in various committees at the United Methodist Church and was a proud member of the sports Hall of Fame.
David is survived by his wife of 61 years; Susan, two daughters Diane (Scott Stieber) DeVinney and Karen (Trevor Baldwin) DeVinney, he was a proud grandfather of 6 grandchildren; Erin, Lindsey, Chelsea, Molly, Casey and Dana all of whom he adored, a brother; Fred (Jean) DeVinney, Susan's twin brother, Jim (Betsy) Burket, and his nephew Craig (Jen) DeVinney He is also survived by many close and loving nieces and nephews, other family and many great friends and you know who you are.
The family would like you to join them to gather for a Celebration of David's Life on Saturday, November 9, 2013 at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 1310 Emerald Terrace, Sun Prairie from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Private family services will be held at Sun Prairie United Methodist Church with graveside services to follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made in memory of David to Sun Prairie United Methodist Church, 702 North Street, Sun Prairie, WI 53590.
By knowing David, our lives were enriched in so many ways and we love him for that.
