Madison-Darrell John Dykhuizen, age 52, passed away on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at St. Mary's Hospital, Madison after a courageous fight with cancer. Darrell was born on December 23, 1959 in Sterling, IL the son of John & Alberta (Smith) Dykhuizen. He was united in marriage with Cheryl Lynn Buege on August 9, 1986 at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Madison of which he is a member. As a youngster, he attended Lions Camp for the Visually Impaired at Lake Villa, IL for several summers and active with the Boy Scouts. While in high school, he attended Whiteside Area Vocational Center, Sterling, IL for two years while attending Milledgeville Unit Dist. 312 graduating in June of 1978. That fall he enrolled into Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, IL majoring in dietetics. In January 1980, he transferred to UW-Stout, Menominee, WI majoring in his chosen field in Hotel and Restaurant Management and earning his B.S. in May 1984. He worked at the Madison Eagles Club, Capitol Centre Foods, the Business Enterprise Program and the Concourse Hotel and Governor's Club all in Madison. Upon deciding to work daytime employment more conducive to raising a family rather than working nights and weekends, he worked at Charter Comm./TCI Cablevision of WI for 14 years in customer service and sales. He later became self-employed opening a small workshop at his home "Wooden You Love It Woodworks" with a new CarveWright wood carving system. He loved photography, fishing, and traveling. He and his wife travelled to Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Jamaica and various areas of the U.S. Both he and his wife have survived life threatening illnesses and accidents until cancer came with a vengeance. Darrell is survived by his wife, Cheryl; his children, Nicholas (19) and Rachel (13) of Madison; his brothers, David (Karen) and Ronald (Colleen) and their families of Rockford; his parents of Milledgeville, IL; his father-in-law, David Buege, Madison; and his beloved Brittany Spaniel, "Chooie". He was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Hazel Buege. A funeral service celebrating his life will be held on Friday, May 4, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the Cress Funeral Home East, Madison with Rev. Marianne Cotter officiating.. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday from 11:30 a.m. until the time of service. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. Memorials may be made in his name to the American Cancer Society.
