WAUNAKEE-Daniel Teetzen, age 78, died peacefully at Madison Heights Senior Community on December 2nd, 2016. Daniel was born in Shawano September 27, 1938, to Karl and Elsie Teetzen. Originally from Shawano, he attended the University of Wisconsin-River Falls on a track scholarship where he was a collegiate miler and two-miler and set the record as a freshman. After graduation, he came to Waunakee as a vocational agriculture and biology teacher at the high school.
He played the French horn in the 32nd Division Band. Trained for combat, his unit was activated in 1961 during the Berlin crisis and spent a year at Fort Lewis, Washington.
He had a successful career in the insurance industry starting in 1964 with the Rural Insurance Company. In 1990, he joined Fortis Sales as regional sales manager for southwest Wisconsin where he worked until April 1998, at which time he joined National Mutual Benefit as Agency Sales & Marketing Coordinator. He retired from National Mutual Benefit in 2004.
Residing in Waunakee, he was very active in his community belonging to both the local Lions Club (Melvin Jones Recipient) and the American Legion where he participated in many fund-raising projects. He chaired the Charter Waunafest Committee and was honored as Grand Marshall at the Waunafest Parade in 2004. He was a charter member of Peace Lutheran Church and sang in the church choir and ushered for many years. In his spare time, he and his three sons enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, and playing horseshoes together. He had a cottage in Shawano where he loved to spend time hunting and fishing with his boys. He was a great story teller and his "tall tales" were legendary!
