Listen to Obituary

We are heartbroken to announce that Daniel Howard Stormer, age 60, of Madison, Wisconsin, passed away on July 10th, 2025, from a rare and aggressive brain tumor. He was surrounded by his loving family and beloved puppies, Jax and Elli.

Dan was born in Madison on January 15, 1965, to Ron and Pat Stormer. From an early age, his independent spirit and knack for fixing things were unmistakable. As a toddler, he insisted on playing with tools instead of toys. This early curiosity led to a lifetime of hands-on work and problem-solving that defined both his career and his character.

A 1983 graduate of Memorial High School, Dan moved to California shortly after and proudly enlisted in the United States Navy. He served six years at sea, helping maintain and support the infrastructure of naval ships — a role of which he was immensely proud. His commitment to keeping things running did not stop there; it became the cornerstone of his professional life. At the time of his passing, Dan served as Superintendent of the Mendota Mental Health Institute Power Plant.

In 2004, Dan married the love of his life and best friend, Cindy (Gundermann) Stormer. Together, they built a life full of love, laughter, and unwavering support for their children and grandchildren. Dan embraced Cindy’s children, Justin (predeceased), Tony and Jaclyn as his own, never once referring to them as “stepchildren.” He formed strong and enduring bonds with each of them, playing catch in the yard, showing up without question, and always making sure they knew how much he loved them. He enjoyed watching his daughter, Amy, show horses and spending time with her brought him immense pride and happiness.

Dan cherished family time and especially loved going on family vacations. Whether it was to Door County, Lake Geneva and recently the Dells with his grandkids or trips to Europe, Dan found true happiness in creating memories with the people he loved most. He and Cindy traveled to Europe multiple times, sharing unforgettable experiences. Exploring new places, laughing over meals, and taking in the sights became cherished traditions. Moments Dan held dear and talked about often.

He was a treasured Papa to Brooklyn, Maverick, Lainey, and Lilah who knew him as their warm, fun-loving, and endlessly supportive Grandfather. He wore the title of Papa with immense pride. Whether offering hugs, jokes, or a helping hand, Dan was truly the best Papa, a guiding light, and a constant source of joy.

He is survived by his wife, Cindy; children Amy (Alex) Trollop, Tony Theis, and Jaclyn (Merrick) Grumke; grandchildren Lainey Trollop, Brooklyn, Maverick, and Lilah Grumke; and siblings Becky (Paul) Gilles, Jane (Casey) McGann, John (Sandy) Stormer, Bobbi Briggs; as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Ron Stormer and Pat Murray, and his beloved stepson, Justin Wise.

Dan will be remembered for his quick wit, generous heart, and unwavering willingness to help others. Whether tackling a big home project or lending a listening ear, he gave his time and skills freely. His sense of humor and genuine kindness left an imprint on everyone he met.

A special thank you to Jaclyn, who lovingly stayed by Dan’s side and cared for him during his final months — a testament to the extraordinary bond they shared.

A visitation and celebration of Dan’s life will be held on Thursday, July 17th, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Cress Funeral Home, Speedway Road, Madison. Friends and loved ones are encouraged to share their “Dan stories” and help honor the beautiful life he lived.

Dan’s legacy of love, service, and laughter lives on in the hearts of all who knew him.
