Curtis George Meffert

December 12, 1938 — July 7, 2025

Waunakee

Curtis George Meffert 86 of Waunakee, Wisconsin died peacefully surrounded by family on Monday, July 7, 2025. Curt was born in 1938, delivered by the country doctor, which was common in those days, to John and Lorraine (Garfoot) Meffert in their farmhouse in the town of Ashton, Wisconsin on Hwy 12. One of his chores as a young farm boy was to work in the family garden. He said it was seldom for a car to be seen on the Hwy, so hearing a car approaching he would always stop his work to see who it was, identify the car and wave.

His early life revolved around family, friends and working with his parents on their farms in Ashton and Waunakee. In 1961 he married Elizabeth Mack of Roxbury. They enjoyed taking classes at M.A.T.C Madison. Curt earned an associate’s degree in Machine Design. Upon completing the program, he was hired by Alcoa to initially work in Davenport, IA and was later transferred to Pittsburg, PA where he completed a B.S. degree in engineering at the University of Pittsburg by working during the day and taking classes in the evenings. Curt and family were then transferred by Alcoa to Texas, later a foreign assignment in Brazil, Indiana, Tennessee and then retirement returning to Ashton, WI, moving back full circle by purchasing the farmhouse his grandparents built in 1910 on Hwy 12 directly across the road from where he was born.

Curt was blessed with two daughters and then sons-in-law, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed his friends, neighbors and singing in the St. Thomas Choir. Known for his work ethic, he finished repairing the last room in his family farmhouse when illness struck. Last job finished, always with good nature, it can be assumed he left this world humming one of his favorite songs, “Here I Am, Lord.”

Survivors include his wife Liz, their two daughters, Carmen (Todd) Nazario of Tyler, TX and Jennifer (Mike) Barakat of Madison; a brother, Gordon (Marilyn) Meffert, brother-in-law, William Butterfield, sisters-in-law, Gladys Theis and Marlene Mack; four grandchildren, Nicholas (Polly) Nazario, Zachary (Heather) Nazario, Brooke Barakat and Samantha Barakat; three great-grandchildren, Bentley, Brooks and Olivia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John, and Lorraine Meffert; father and mother-in-law, Bill, and Alice Mack; brother Roland, sister Carol; brothers-in-law Jerry Dahmen, Virgil Theis, Robert Bonjour, Kenneth Mack and sisters-in-law Marcy Meffert, Lou Ann Bonjour and Dorothy Butterfield.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, with visitation starting at 10:00 am at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 602 Everglade Drive, Madison, followed by 11:00 am Mass. Everyone is welcome to join Curt’s family at the luncheon served in the church dining room following the service. Interment will follow the luncheon.
