Craig S. Hackl

It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Craig Hackl, who left this world surrounded by his loving family on August 8, 2026. Born May 10, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, Craig lived a life marked by kindness, creativity, and a quiet strength that touched all who knew him. Craig is preceded in death by his parents, Reuben and Arline (Maas) Hackl.

Craig was the beloved husband of Sue (Kuhn) Hackl, with whom he shared 38 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they built a life filled with love and dedication, raising two beautiful daughters, Emily (Joe) Hastreiter and Amanda (Nick) Antonelli. Craig's legacy of warmth and humor continues through his cherished grandchildren, Evelyn, Eliza, and Eli, who brought immense joy to his life.

Craig's educational journey was marked by an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. He was a lifelong learner who earned a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, and an MBA, all of which contributed to his notable career as a food scientist in research and development. Over the years, he made significant contributions to Dean Foods, Kerry Foods, and, ultimately, Sargento Foods, until his retirement in 2022. His most celebrated professional achievement was the invention of the Sargento Balanced Breaks snack, showcasing his innovative spirit and commitment to excellence.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Craig was a man of many interests and talents. He was a gifted artist, renowned for his ability to create stunning stained glass pieces that captured both light and imagination. His artistic endeavors were complemented by his love of scuba diving, an activity that introduced him to lifelong friends Mike and Cindy O'Brien through the Scuba Diving Club of Rockford, Illinois.

Craig's gentle nature and quick wit made him a beloved figure among family and friends. He was a man of few words, but his presence was always calming and reassuring. His subtle humor and well-timed one-liners brought smiles to many faces, creating fond memories for those who were fortunate enough to know him.

A visitation will be held from 9:30–11 a.m. on Saturday August 15, 2026, at Cress Funeral Home, 1310 Emerald Terrace, Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, 53590. A memorial service to honor Craig's remarkable life will immediately follow the visitation at the funeral home at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Craig's memory to the Muscular Dystrophy Association or Bristol Hospice of Madison, Wisconsin.
