Claire Weber

Claire Weber, daughter of Jennie and Joseph Schiffman was born July 6, 1926, in New York City and died of natural causes in Madison, Wisconsin on November 25th, 2016. She was married to Filmore George Weber on November 16, 1947 in the Bronx, NY and they remained happily married until his death on November 7, 2010.

Claire is survived by her four children, Candace, Raimie, Laurance, Marshall; daughters-in-law Chelsea and Denise; grandchildren Samuel and Isabelle; great grandchildren, Mackenna and Corbin, and Sam's wife Sarah. She is further survived by her sister-in-law Bobbie Schiffman and her children Fredda, Mindy and George; their children and spouses. She was predeceased by her beloved brother Billy Schiffman and adored sister Helene Schiffman Doscher.

Claire had an exuberant, gracious personality. She was a loving mother, daughter, and sibling. Her friends would say she was generous, authentic and loyal. An avid reader of fiction, non-fiction and news media, she read at least 5-6 books every week until her dying day. Her perceptive sense of humor, her academic and professional lives were informed by both her reading and her extensive travels with Fil.

Claire received a Bachelor in Arts from Hunter College, New York City in 1947 and a Masters in Social Work at University of Connecticut in 1981. She earned her CISW in 1986. She had a lifelong commitment to civil and human rights exemplified by an outstanding two decades long career in social work. She started her career in1968 with the Children and Youth Services program of the State of Connecticut Department of Social Services. Claire was a courageous field worker, supervisor, trainer and court advocate for women, children and families working in some of the most underserved communities in the country. She was well respected by her clients, law enforcement, peers, supervisors and judges.

In 1981, Claire began teaching graduate students at the University of Connecticut as Associate Director of the New England Regional Child Welfare Training Center. She was Assistant Professor and Assistant Director of the Child Welfare Institute at Saint Joseph College, Hartford, CT from 1982-1986. She wrote and co-wrote too many monographs and publications to list here. After retirement, she continued to work as a volunteer advocating for the underserved in her community. In 2008, Claire and Fil retired from their long-time home in Connecticut and moved to Madison, Wisconsin.

Claire's intelligence, humor and generosity will be greatly missed by her family, lifetime friends and the new community of friends and neighbors she had made in Madison over the past years. Memorial donations may be made to Planned Parenthood or the charity of your choice.
