IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Christine
Kalvelage
December 3, 1942 – January 21, 2026
Christine Monroe Kalvelage, age 83, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2026, in Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin. Born on December 3, 1942, in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, Christine lived a life marked by creativity, grace, love and thoughtfulness.
Christine was the daughter of Dorthy (Loew) Monroe and William Monroe. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents as well as her sisters Suzanne (Monroe) Ferkey and Julie (Monroe) Harris. Though she experienced the sorrow of these losses, Christine’s life remained a testament to resilience and joy.
She is lovingly remembered by her two sons, Brian Kalvelage and Andrew (Christina) Kalvelage. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Caleb, Peter, LeAnna, and Dylan. Each of them carries forward a part of her—her warmth, her kindness, her creativity, and her joy for life.
Christine dedicated many years of service to the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Prior to that chapter in her life, she shared her talents as both an artist and an art teacher. Christine was also an accomplished pianist who’s music enriched many holiday seasons and church services. Her creative spirit was evident not only in the arts, but also in the way she approached everyday life—with beauty, intention, and care.
Those who knew Christine often speak of her beaming smile, childlike joy, and eye for beauty, and good taste.
Among the many fond memories shared by family and friends are the caramels Christine would make—treats that became legendary among those lucky enough to receive them. Much like Christine herself, they were one-of-a-kind: flavorful yet mild, sweet with a quiet strength that lingered long after they were gone.
Christine’s life was defined not just by what she did but by how she lived and how she loved. Her life was rich. Though she was never wealthy she had the ability to enjoy the finer things of life better than anyone. She made everyday life feel special and full of adventure even when times were tough.
Her love was truly sacrificial, yet you did not feel the sacrifice only the sweetness of it. Her love was deep, indelibly so upon all the hearts of those that experienced it.
At the end of her life, Christine rested in the finished work of Christ on the cross and trusted in His grace alone for forgiveness and salvation. She is now and always in the care of The Shepherd of her soul.
A memorial service is pending for the Spring. Family and friends will be notified when the details are ready.
