Charlotte Richards

MADISON-Charlotte Jean Richards, age 84, died January 30, 2016, in Madison, Wisconsin. She was born in Bloom Township, Richland County, Wisconsin, daughter of Aaron J. and Flossie (Rockwell) Hilleshiem.

She earned her teaching degree from Platteville Normal School and eventually went on to earn a Ph.D., in education administration from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The majority of her professional career was devoted to special education.

She married James L. Richards, Sr., on October 16, 1950 and enjoyed almost 50 years of laughter with him before his death.

Char was very proud of her family. It was a comfort that her three children could be with her as she passed from this life. She is survived by her children, Jane Richards; Ann (Keith Horstman) Richards; and James (Lucy) Richards; and her sister, Julia Raether. She is further survived by her beloved grandchildren, Deanna Schuette; Celia Ravel; William, Elizabeth, and Eleanor Richards; Rachel Rury; and Jason Horstman, as well as great-grandchildren Foster Rury, and Emma and Riley Horstman, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a sister, Katherine Clawson.

In accordance with Char's wishes, no memorial services will be held.
