Oregon, WI - Charles L. "Chuck" Wineland, age 67, of Oregon, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 20, 2017, at St. Mary's Hospital due to complications following treatment for lymphoma. He was born on March 31, 1950 in Madison, Wisconsin, the only child of John and Ann Wineland. He married his childhood sweetheart, Karen Kelly on December 14, 1973. He is survived by his wife, Karen of Oregon; their children: Anna Wineland (William Fleming) and children Ben Van Kauwenbergh, Leah Van Kauwenbergh, and Rune Fleming of Madison; and Laura (Reno) Fernandez and children Hattie Sue and Josephine of Benicia, California; his mother, Ann Sphar of Oregon; his sister-in-law, Kathleen Kelly (Babette Wainwright) of Madison; his brother-in-law, Patrick Kelly (Mary Sue) of Benicia, California and many devoted friends. He was preceded in death by his father, John Moses Wineland.
Chuck graduated from East High in Madison in 1968. He received a B.A. degree in radio, film, and TV in 1973 from UW-Madison. He worked for the Wisconsin Department of Corrections for many years. He and Karen started their family in Brooklyn, WI, and later moved to Oregon, WI.
Chuck was friendly, exhibiting great enthusiasm for meeting and talking to new people, and had an incredible memory for names and faces. He had an inquisitive mind and never stopped learning new things. He had a wide and ever-increasing range of interests including fly fishing, woodworking, home-improvement projects, and participation in community theater. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Madison and president of the Brooklyn Fishermen's Club. He will be remembered for his wry, sparkling sense of humor. He was a true connoisseur of corny jokes.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 25, 2017, at First United Methodist Church, 203 Wisconsin Avenue, Madison. A visitation will begin one hour prior to service at the church. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Madison on Monday, June 26 at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Chuck's honor to Gilda's Club (a cancer support group), First United Methodist Church of Madison or any charity felt appropriate in honoring him.
