Charles Reid

Charles W. Reid, age 90, was born on September 1, 1922 in Chicago, Ill., the only child of Charles W. Reid and Phamie (Anderson) Reid. He died on July 16, 2013 after a long illness. Charles took much pride in his Swedish and Scotch-Irish heritage and was the first American born generation on his father's side. He was raised in Rhinelander, WI and graduated from Rhinelander High School in 1940. He studied piano and organ in Rhinelander with selected musical compositions and music theory supplied by Sherwood Music School. He completed his studies at Sherwood Music School while in residence in Chicago during the summer of 1940 and continued to play the piano and enjoy music well into his adult years. During WWII, Charles was in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 - 1946. His overseas service was in the China Burma India Theatre of Operations. He was awarded two bronze stars, one for the China Offensive and one for Central Burma. He is a graduate of the University of WI, Madison, and the University of WI Law School. Charles married Lois Jean Grimstad on December 23, 1950, a loving marriage that lasted 56 years until her death in 2007. His principal long term employment was with Cuna Mutual Insurance Group in Madison where he retired in 1988 as Vice President and Associate General Counsel, after serving the company for 27 years. He was a charter member of Asbury United Methodist Church, where he volunteered many hours of his time for various building projects requiring his expertise on legal matters. Charles enjoyed travel with his family as well as spending vacations and summers at the family lake home in Rhinelander. A favorite winter destination was Navarre Beach, Florida where he and Lois spent much time. He also took part in a wide range of other activities including golf, skiing, water-skiing and attending UW Badger football games. He and Lois were season ticket holders for over 50 years. His wide smile, great sense of humor, generosity and kindness will be missed. He is predeceased by his wife, Lois. He is survived by his son, Chuck (Carol) Reid of Shoreview, MN and daughter, Ellen (Bill) Cornwall of Woodbury, MN as well as two grandchildren, Lisa and Scott Reid. Visitation will be held at Cress Center, 6021 University Avenue, Madison, WI on Monday, July 22, 2013 from 4-7 PM and one hour prior to services at the church. Funeral services will be held at Asbury United Methodist Church, 6101 University, Ave. Madison, WI Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at 11:00 AM. Memorials preferred to Asbury United Methodist Church, Madison, WI.
