Sun Prairie - Charles C. "Chuck" Cornils, age 88, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at Oak Park Place after a brief illness and went to be with his Lord. He was born on April 6, 1926 in Two Rivers, Wisconsin to Edward and Adelia (Kotchi) Cornils. Charles was married on November 13, 1982, to the former Shirley Byers Allmon. He was a member of St. Albert the Great Catholic Church in Sun Prairie.
In January 1944, at age 17, Charles enlisted in the U.S. Navy. After serving 2 years in the Navy, he returned home to Two Rivers and graduated from high school in 1947. He later joined the Wisconsin Army National Guard, serving in the 57th Field Artillery, 1st Bn 126th FA, Assistant Commandant at the Wisconsin NG Military Academy and HQ-STARC, before retiring in April 1986. Charles was a full time WIARNG federal technician for most of his National Guard service. He loved working with young adults and was a DNR Hunter Safety Instructor. He loved hunting and fishing and enjoyed the outdoors.
He was a member of VFW Post 8483, American Legion Post 333, the North Bristol Gun Club and a former member of the Lions Club.
He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Cornils; his children, Kathleen (Paul) Sanford and Kevin Cornils; step children, Sandra (James) Paske and Alan (Carol) Allmon; grandchildren, Joshua Sanford, Daniel (Stacy) Sanford, Steven, Robert and Christopher Cornils, Rebecca (Nathan) Utech, Michael Paske, Ryan and Emily Allmon; 4 great grandchildren, DJ, Matthew, Robert and James; a brother, Roger (Anna Mae) Cornils; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and loving friends.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, Richard and a nephew, Tristan.
Funeral services will be held at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 1310 Emerald Terrace, Sun Prairie, on Thursday, June 12, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, June 11, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a pass and review by VFW Post 8483 and Auxiliary and again on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be in Sun Prairie Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Agrace HospiceCare.
