Charleen Halverson

May 20, 1932 — July 6, 2012

Halverson, Charleen (Stai)
Madison/Stoughton-Charleen Beth (Stai) Halverson, age 80, passed away on Friday, July 6, 2012 at her home in Madison after a long illness. She was born in Stoughton on May 20, 1932 to Lyman and Nora (Aaberg) Stai. Charleen and Philip Halverson were united in marriage on April 10, 1960 and had just celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary. For many years, Charleen worked as a housekeeper at local hotels and private homes. She also worked seasonal jobs in tobacco and at the Swiss Colony. She had 2 sisters, Joan Bentz & Leona Thorson; and 2 brothers, Jimmy Stai & Rodney Scheu. Charleen had 7 children from her first marriage to Rodney Martin; Tom (JoJo), Jerry, Sue Clark, Kathy, Deb, Steve, & Randy; and one son, Dave, with Philip.
Charleen enjoyed her trips to the cabin & the beach. She also liked fishing, playing cards & bingo and watching the Packers on TV. "Grandma Chy" was known for her delicious home-made cookies and her bottom-less coffee pot. She loved going to Las Vegas, and hitting garage sales & thrift stores to find that special bargain. Spending time with her kids and grandkids meant to the world to her.
Survivors include her husband, Philip, brother Rodney, children, 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; sons Jerry & Steve; and siblings Joan, Leona & Jimmy.
A memorial service will be held at Cress Funeral Home in Stoughton on Saturday, July 14, 2012. Visitation is from 10:00-11:00, with the service starting at 11:00. A luncheon will follow at the VFW in Stoughton.
Special thanks to all the doctors & nurses who have provided care for Charleen and especially to her daughter, Kathy, who took care of her at home for the last several months. She is free at last and with her heavenly father.
