Madison - Carol Shackelford, age 95, passed away in her sleep on October 4, 2017 at her home in Madison, Wisconsin. Carol Lois Schoene was born in Denver, Colorado on November 14, 1921 to Carl and Edith Schoene. An only child, she was close to her many cousins. She attended Denver Public Schools and earned a degree in Library Science from Denver University. Working as a librarian in Cheyenne, Wyoming, she met a young Army Lieutenant named Hugh Shackelford. They corresponded while he served in Europe, and they married after he returned in 1945. They had two sons, Martin and Alan, and moved to Saginaw, Michigan in 1950. She remained close to her family in Colorado, and we visited them every summer. A great wife and mother, she resumed working as a children's librarian at Hoyt Library, until her retirement in 1981. She visited Saginaw schools as the Story Lady, and entertained children at the library with Noa the boa constrictor. She enjoyed playing bridge and golf. Carol was an avid reader who loved a good mystery, but also enjoyed non-fiction. Following Hugh's death in 2006, she moved to Madison, Wisconsin to be closer to her grandson Jesse. There, she was active in Covenant Presbyterian church and attended exercise classes at the YWCA. She is survived by her sons Martin Shackelford and Alan Shackelford, her daughter-in-law Mary Anna Shackelford, and her grandson Jesse Evan Shackelford, all of Madison. A memorial service will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 326 S. Segoe Rd. in Madison at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 28, 2017.
