Carol Jean Montgomery
September 23, 1931- January 20, 2018
Carol Jean Montgomery (nee Schwichtenberg) passed away unexpectedly on January 20, 2018. Carol was born in West Bend, Wisconsin on September 23, 1931. Fourth of five children, Carol was the first in her family to graduate high school in 1949. In 1953, she married Roger Montgomery. Together, they had three children- John, R. Douglas, and Victoria.
Carol worked a variety of positions through her life. She always commented that she "knew a little about everything- enough to be dangerous". From early careers working as a cashier, soda jerk, secretary, and bookkeeper, she spent the bulk of her work life as an accounts receivable clerk at Broan Manufacturing (Hartford, Wisconsin) and in various managerial and coordination positions at the Wisconsin DOT (Madison, WI), an organization she affiliated with for some 22 years.
Carol's involvement outside of the workplace drew from her outgoing nature, compassion, and sense of community. She participated in the Homemaker's Association, Daughters of the Nile Zor Shrine Ladies' Association, Order of the Eastern Star, P.E.O., Who's New, and was very active in church outreach programs and volunteering at Oakwood village, especially after her retirement.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Elsie and Johann Schwichtenberg, her husband, Roger Douglas Montgomery Sr., and her sisters May Groh and Donna Witz. She is survived by her siblings, Herb Schwichtenberg of Slinger, Eleanor Holzmann of West Bend; her children, John Montgomery, of Rochelle, Il., R. Douglas Montgomery Jr. (Karen Brock), of Madison, and Victoria A. Montgomery of Middleton; and her grandchildren, Devon and Demeter Brock-Montgomery, and Michael Montgomery.
Asbury United Methodist Church (6101 University Avenue, Madison) will be hosting Carol's celebration of life on Friday, January 26th, 2018. Friends may great the family from 10:00-11:00am, followed by a service at 11:00am with Rev. Paul Yoder officating. Interment will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery.
Donations can be sent to Oakwood Lutheran Senior Ministries, Carol's incredible community and home for the past 15 years, or Asbury United Methodist Church.
She will be remembered for many things- among them, her forthrightness and charming sense of humor, her generosity, her aptitude for German cooking and growing an overabundance of cherry tomatoes, and her love that saturated everything she did. Du liegst mir im herzen.
