Carol H Brown

February 7, 1934 — January 9, 2026

Madison

Carol Helen Helm Brown, age 91, of Madison, passed away January 9, 2026, at All Saints Neighborhood after a brief illness. She was born February 7, 1934, in Racine, WI, the daughter of Fred and Helen Helm. She married George “Brownie” Brown on May 14, 1960, at St. Rose Catholic Church in Racine.

Carol attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison and proudly graduated with Phi Beta Kappa honors while earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism in 1956. She worked for Methodist and Madison General Hospitals in the public relations departments, where she wrote various newsletters and publications. Her last position was as Public Relations Director for United Way of Dane County, from which she retired in 1994.

Carol enjoyed camping and boating with Brownie and her children near Lake Arbutus in Hatfield, WI, and later, on a property they purchased in Rome, WI. Carol and Brownie were avid Wisconsin Badger fans, holding season hockey tickets for many years and season football tickets for more than 50 years. They not only enjoyed home games, but traveled with other fans to many away games, including two Badger Rose Bowl games Carol attended with her daughters. Brownie passed away far too early in 1992, and Carol became a fiercely independent woman, vacationing in Ireland, on an Alaskan cruise and a small ship cruise on the Danube. Carol was a prolific reader, sewer, knitter, and shopper, and delighted in her grandchildren.

Carol is survived by; her two daughters, Cheryl (Dana Lubet) and Mary (Matt Satterlund), five grandchildren, Casey (Lexie) Rogers and Jenny Rogers, Nikki, Emily, and Jason Satterlund, and 2 great-grandchildren Jimmie and Charlie Rogers. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Brownie, and her brother Fred Helm and his wife Martha, who was a dear friend and the sister Carol never had.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church at a later date, after which Carol will be laid to rest with Brownie in the military section of Forest Hill cemetery. The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff at All Saints Neighborhood, to Agrace Hospice, and a special thanks to her niece Jan Kellner (Mike), for all their kind care and support during the last years. Memorials may be made to Agrace.org/Donate.
