MADISON - Bruce Richard Mjaanes, age 71, passed away peacefully on Friday May 26th, 2017 at his home surrounded by family. He was born in Beloit Aug 16, 1945 to Ledvin and Marjorie (French) Mjaanes.
Bruce was united in marriage to Cheryl Blankenheim on June 8, 1968 in Madison, WI. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1967 and also received his Master's degree in education from the UW. Bruce was a beloved history teacher at Madison West High school for 43 years and influenced the lives of thousands of Madison teenagers over the course of his long career. Bruce loved woodworking and spending time at the cabin he built in central Wisconsin with family.
He is survived by his three children Jeffrey, Christopher and Bryan; daughters-in-law, Mercedes, Kelly, and Heather; grandchildren, Kelsey, Riley, Gabriela, Colin, Charlie, Lucia, Zachary and Ellie; brother, Rolf; sisters Kristine and Linda. He was preceded in death by his wife Cheryl, father Ledvin and mother Marjorie "Marge" Mjaanes.
A visitation will be held from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM on Friday, June 2, 2017 at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison. A graveside service for the immediate family will take place at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery on Saturday Jun 3, 2017 with a lunch to follow for friends and family at The Great Dane Pub at Hilldale, 357 Price Place, Madison at 12:00 noon.
The family will be establishing a scholarship fund at the University of Wisconsin School of Education in memory of Bruce.
The family would like to thank Bruce's caregivers at Home Instead for their wonderful support and also Jennifer and Beth at Agrace Hospice Care for the wonderful care provided to Bruce.
