Bruce John
Brechtl
Sep 17, 1953 — Jul 12, 2026

Olbrich Gardens
12:00 - 3:00 pm (Central time)
Bruce John Brechtl passed away peacefully in his favorite chair on July 12, 2026, just 41 days after the passing of the love of his life, his beloved "Honeybear," Mary Jo. Though his family takes comfort in knowing they are together again, Bruce's absence leaves an immeasurable void in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Bruce was a devoted husband of 53 years to Mary Jo, a loving father to daughters, Laura and Maria, brother-in-law to Patty, proud father-in-law to Neil and Chris, and affectionate brother to his sister and brother-in-law, Sherri and Fred Yates.
Bruce was born in Madison on September 17, 1953. He was the son of Clayton (Casey) and Irene Brechtl. He graduated from Edgewood High School in 1971 and swore that he was the person who planted every tree around Edgewood, at the behest of his beloved nun, Sister Alphonsine, one tree for every time he caused trouble.
Family was at the center of Bruce's life, and his greatest joy came from spending time with those he loved.
Bruce embraced life with passion and curiosity, filling his days with hobbies that reflected both his talent and adventurous spirit. An accomplished hunter, he enjoyed both firearm and archery hunting. His dedication to archery earned him the distinction of serving as a staff shooter for Hoyt Archery, where he competed on the national stage.
When he wasn't outdoors, Bruce could often be found in his woodworking shop, crafting beautiful pieces with patience and skill. Music was another lifelong passion. He loved playing the banjo and found great happiness in the sounds of bluegrass music, whether performing, listening, or simply sharing it with others. He was a passionate fan of Christmas, and his last request was that the family join him for Christmas Eve service.
Bruce also had an enormous heart for animals. He never met a furry friend he didn't love, and his granddogs always knew that Grandpa Bruce would arrive with burgers just for them. His kindness extended to both people and animals alike, leaving a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Bruce will be remembered for his generous heart, unwavering love for his family, and the joy he found in life's simple pleasures. Whether he was in the woods, in his workshop, with a banjo in his hands, sharing laughter with Neil on an early morning on the golf course or with Chris at the range, he lived fully and loved deeply.
Bruce has gone ahead to join Mary Jo, his parents, Casey and Irene, and baby brother Mark, along with many other family members. They are all are having a euchre party for the ages.
He is survived by his daughters, Laura (Neil) Stechschulte and Maria (Chris) Ankele, Patty Fenner, Sherri and Fred Yates, and countless friends whose lives were enriched by his kindness, humor, and friendship.
Though our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing that Bruce is reunited with his Honeybear, together once again after only 41 days apart. Their love was the foundation of a beautiful life, and that love endures in the family they created and the memories they leave behind.
A celebration of Bruce and Mary Jo’s life will be held at Olbrich Gardens in the Atrium Room on September 20th from 12pm to 3pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Dane County Humane Society.
