Madison- Bonnie Leak McCarthy passed away peacefully on July 1, 2016, surrounded by her loving family. What a big, full life she lived! Born on April 15, 1935 and raised in the small village of MN Lake, MN that she always loved, she went on to settle in the Madison area.
Bonnie was lively, colorful, full of personality and stories. She was a generous, open-minded woman; strong and self-sufficient. She worked for many years as an award winning sales person for several Madison area furniture companies, including American TV and Steinhafels, and enjoyed her work tremendously. She was an honest, knowledgeable salesperson who knew how to listen.
She had two daughters, Nancy Bogue (husband Derek Brigham, children Nadia, Jackson, Zoe and Marta) and Patsy Opsal (husband Rod Opsal, children Stacy and Abby) whom she loved very much. She was an awesome grandmother, caring for her grandchildren in many ways, including hosting many movie and grilled cheese nights. Bonnie also had a great sense of humor. She was preceded in death by her parents (Sandy and Lill Leak) and two siblings (Konnie and Donnie Leak). She had many dear friends and family members, all of whom she really would have given the shirt off her back.
We sincerely thank SouthernCare Hospice Services for their steady and caring guidance through this process. And, our unbounded gratitude goes to the exceptional staff at Kindred Hearts Memory Care of Cottage Grove. You offered Bonnie highly competent and sincere care. You made us laugh, and you cried with us. You called her "Bon Bon", and you are all in our hearts.
A service will be held on July 17, 2016 at Wellspring United Methodist Church, with visitation from 1 pm - 2 pm followed by a short service and root beer floats (a favorite of hers). Please consider a donation to the Alzheimer's Association of Wisconsin. Together we will defeat this terrible disease. Thank you.
She once asked for the song "On Eagle's Wings" to be played at her funeral. May she forever rest in God's arms and fly once in awhile on eagle's wings.
