Betty Jane Roberts-Knutzen

Betty Jane Roberts-Knutzen passed await in the early morning hours of August 24, 2026.

Betty was born in Rice Lake, Wisconsin, on July 9, 1934, to William and Lucretia Roberts. She spent her early childhood in Green Bay, Wisconsin, with her parents and three older sisters, Margaret, Lucretia, and Marie. Following the death of her father when Betty was just five years old, she moved to her grandparents’ farm in Lodi, Wisconsin.

Betty graduated from Lodi High School in 1952 as salutatorian of her class. Her love of education and learning continued throughout her life. At the age of 54, Betty fulfilled a longtime goal by earning her bachelor’s degree in social work from the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay. She dedicated 33 years to state employment at Mendota State Hospital, beginning her career as a CNA and later working as a drug and alcohol counselor (AODA).

Betty met her soulmate, Dave Knutzen, later in life, beginning a beautiful partnership filled with love, companionship, and adventure that spanned 37 years of marriage. Betty had a deep appreciation for art and creativity. She was especially well known for her knowledge of pottery and her collection of Roseville pottery. Dave and Betty spent many happy years traveling together and searching for treasures to add to their collection.

Betty also enjoyed sewing, knitting, quilting, exercise, and spending time in nature. Her determination and love of staying active were evident throughout her life. At age 55, she completed a marathon, and from ages 85 to 89, she continued taking yoga classes alongside her daughter.

Betty is survived by her husband, Dave; her daughters, Valarie Huegel and Debra (Michael) Kuehn; and her stepchildren, Mark Knutzen, Kelly (Ron) Sporseen, Kurt (Audrey) Knutzen, and Kim (Michael) Knutzen. While her family mourns her passing, they are grateful that Betty’s legacy will continue through her 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Throughout her life, Betty faced challenges with grace, courage, and determination. She was rarely one to complain or criticize and instead found comfort and purpose in helping others in need. Her loss leaves an ache in the hearts of those who loved her, but her example and encouragement to be “the best version of ourselves” will continue to inspire her family to follow her lead.

Betty’s family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the staff of Home Again Assisted Living, Dr. Khan, and Hospice for their expertise, compassion, and loving care.

Special thanks are extended to Kendra and Melissa of Agrace, whose encouragement and dedicated care helped provide Betty with comfort and quality of life during her final days.
