Betty Demopoulos

September 30, 1927 — February 8, 2014

MADISON - Betty Demopoulos, age 86, passed away on February 8th, 2014 at Attic Angels in Middleton.
She was born on September 30, 1927 the daughter of proud Greek immigrants John and Assimo (Tsibouris) Sarris in Antigo, Wisconsin.
She met her future husband Dino at a wedding but when he didn't ask her to dance, she teased him saying "thanks for the dance." The next time they met, they danced all night. Before they could marry, Dino was drafted into the army to fight in Korea. He was captured and MIA in a POW camp for the duration of the war. Betty waited for him and they became engaged soon after he was freed. They married on Valentine's Day 1954 in Sheboygan, WI.
Dino and son Mark were avid golfers so Betty gamely learned how and she was pretty darn good. She loved entertaining and cooking her delicious Greek dishes for Dino's business associates. But she was most famous for her chocolate chip cookies--asked for and sent to every office Mark worked at.
They moved to Madison soon after their first grandchild was born to daughter Jean. After Dino died in 1989, she remained active in the Greek church and enjoyed following Badger football and basketball. She remained a true Badger fan until she died.
She was a talented knitter and was so proud when Katy Sai mentioned her by name for donating oh so many handknit hats for "Coats for Kids."
But what she loved most was spending time with her grandchildren Kali and Nick. She was the best yiayia there could be.
She is survived by her children Dr Jean Demopoulos (Douglas Johnson) and Mark Demopoulos; two grandchildren Kali and Nicholas Johnson; a brother Peter Sarris (Norma) and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother Arthur Sarris and her beloved husband Dino Demopoulos. She never got over his early death.
A visitation will be held Friday, February 14th, at the Cress Center, 6021 University Ave., Madison, from 4 - 7pm. Funeral Service will be Saturday, February 15th, at 11 am, at St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church, 1425 S. 10th St., Sheboygan, WI with Fr. Michael Sterns presiding. Interment to follow at Wildwood Cemetery, Sheboygan.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, Madison WI; St Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church (1425 S 10th ST), Sheboygan WI or AGRACE Hospice.
Jean and Mark wish to extend a thank you to Sara Kolk from Hospice for her kindness and Vicki Tomaszewski for the companionship and care she provided our mother to the very end. You are both very special. And to Doug - you were more than a son-in-law to Betty. Only a son would have taken the care you gave in being there every one of her last days.
