It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Barbara Schroud Thomas, born on August 26, 1948, who left us peacefully on April 19, 2024. Barbara was the embodiment of compassion, empathy, and love, touching many lives with her kindness and generous spirit.
Barbara was born in Woodland, California, and raised in and around Madison, Wisconsin. A gifted student, she graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, dedicating many years of her life to working as a medical technologist at several hospitals in Evanston, IL and South Florida until her retirement.
Barbara leaves behind a loving family: her sons Desmond Thomas and James White, her daughter Lisa Emrekovic, her grandchildren Gabby, Andrew, Desmond III, Tyler, Kimberly Thomas, Noa Emrekovic, Anjani, and Dante White. She also leaves behind her brother Tom Schroud and her sister Connie Skalitzky. She was predeceased by her mother, Marjorie Wawrzon, and her brother, Paul Schroud.
Barb was a woman of many passions. She relished the simple pleasures of a good BLT sandwich, a scoop of ice cream, and Wisconsin cheese curds. Her love for red wine was only rivalled by her affinity for a good book, Aretha Franklin's music, and episodes of Dr. Pol. Her eyes sparkled when discussing her family's history.
She found joy in the games of Gin Rummy 500 and Solitaire, was captivated by the performances of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and was an avid reader. Her preferred form of exercise was walking on the beach, something she enjoyed while on vacation in her favorite spot, Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Back home, she could frequently be found at Curt's Cafe, one of her favored local hangouts.
Described by many as loving, gentle, fun, warm, caring, considerate, compassionate, empathetic, and understanding, Barb will be remembered fondly by those whose lives she touched. She believed in the power of love through great deeds, a lesson she passed on to her family and friends. Her greatest accomplishment was being the glue that kept her family afloat in the hustle and bustle of South Florida. Her legacy of kindness and generosity will forever be remembered and cherished by all who knew her.
A memorial service for Barbara will be held on May 4, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Cress Funeral & Cremation Service, 1310 Emerald Terrace, Sun Prairie, WI. The visitation will be from 10:00 AM until the service at the funeral home on Saturday. As we come together to celebrate her life, we remember a woman whose love, kindness, and generosity touched us all.
