Barbara S. Nordeng, 68, passed away on Wednesday June 26, 2013 at Agrace Hospice Care after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She died peacefully with her husband, Richard and sons Eric, Bradley and Gregory at her bedside. She was born December 5, 1944 in Platteville, Wisconsin to Ralph and Lois (Peggy) Black who preceded her in death. She married Richard Nordeng on June 17, 1967 and spent forty-six wonderful years with him. She was a Madison resident for forty-one years.
Barb was an avid game player, especially duplicate bridge, where she attained the rank of silver life master. She was also an accomplished athlete, excelling in golf, tennis, bowling, and softball. Barb loved all sorts of crafts, including card making, scrapbooking, knitting, embroidery and crocheting. She was an enthusiastic sports fan, who faithfully attended UW basketball and football games for over thirty years.
Barb loved children. She taught elementary school and preschool for over thirty years.
Above all, however, Barb was a family person. In her role as "Grandma Mo," she adored her four grandchildren and spent countless hours playing with them, reading to them, teaching them how to bake or sew or do crafts, and showing them her love. She doted on her three sons and was an adoring wife. Barb enjoyed a wonderful, loving relationship with all three of her daughters-in-law. Barb's favorite occasion was Christmas Eve, when the whole family would gather to celebrate, exchange gifts, and play games. She loved to relax at the Black family cottage along the Oconto River in Pulcifer, Wisconsin.
Along with her husband of forty-six years and three sons, Barb is survived by her three daughters-in-law Kristine Nordeng, Marie Nordeng, and Olivia Nordeng; four grandchildren Ivory Nordeng (age 9), Taylor Nordeng (age 9), Azalea Nordeng (age 7), and Dane Nordeng (age 4); one sister Rebecca (Becky) Livick; and one brother Frederick (Fritz) Black.
A visitation celebrating Barb's life will be held at the Cress Center, 6021 University Avenue, Madison, Wisconsin on Monday July 1, 2013 from 4-7p.m. A funeral service will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 5701 Raymond Rd., Madison, Wisconsin on Tuesday July 2, 2013 at 3:00p.m with a one hour visitation starting prior to the service. All family and friends are welcome to attend a reception at Quivey's Grove, 6261 Nesbitt Rd., Madison, Wisconsin on Tuesday July 2, 2013 beginning at 4:30p.m. regardless of attendance at the visitation or funeral. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Barb's name to St. Mary's Care Center, 3401 Maple Grove Dr., Madison, WI. 53719 or Agrace HospiceCare, 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway, Madison, WI. 53711.
