Madison - Anne Scott passed away on November 19, 2017 in Madison. She leaves behind a loving family who will miss her dearly.
She was born in New York City of Scottish parents and throughout her life she cherished her Scottish heritage. She was a graduate of The Mary Louis Academy of Jamaica Estates in Queens, and St. John's University College in Brooklyn (1954), graduating with honors and as valedictorian of her class. In 1954 she was the outstanding debater in the NYC Hall of Fame Tournament. She attended St. John's University Graduate School from 1955-57 while also teaching full-time at St. Joseph's Commercial H.S. in Brooklyn. On June 1, 1957 she married Charles Thomas Scott and in 1958, with their first-born son, she accompanied her husband to Kabul, Afghanistan, where Charles held an appointment with Teachers College, Columbia University, teaching at Kabul University. A second son was born in Kabul in 1959. Anne taught part-time at the Afghan Institute of Technology and also at the International School in Kabul. In 1960 the family returned to the States and a daughter was born in New York City. They then moved to Austin, TX where Charles started Ph.D. studies at the University of Texas. A second daughter was born in 1962. On completion of his Ph.D. Charles was appointed to the faculty of the English Department at the University of Wisconsin and the family moved to Madison. Anne coordinated religious education classes at her local parish. In 1965 she and her family went to Japan where Charles had been appointed consultant to the English Language Education Council of Tokyo. While he also served as English language tutor to the Crown Prince and Princess of Japan, Anne taught English to the chamberlains and ladies-in-waiting at their palace. The family returned to Madison in 1966. She volunteered with the Wisconsin Ballet School and also served on the board of directors of St. Paul's University Catholic Center. She gave tireless help to her husband during his years as Chair of the Department of English. In 1975 the family moved to Boston during Charles' sabbatical at MIT. On their return to Madison, Anne resumed her volunteer work with Wisconsin Ballet, Madison Savoyards, and University League. She worked part-time in the UW Graduate School Accounting office, then became office manager for Madison Repertory Theater in 1979. In 1981 she was employed full-time as ticket office manager for the Madison Civic Center, a position which she held for twenty years until her retirement in January 2001. She also continued her volunteer work, serving as president of University League in 2006-07, as well as assisting on the Madison Symphony Orchestra League. Just before and after her retirement, she and Charles enjoyed trips to Ireland, England, Scotland, Egypt, and the Holy Land.
Anne was preceded in death by her parents, John and Anne Mulgrew, and by her brother and sister-in-law, John and Mary Ellen Mulgrew.
She is survived by Charles, her husband of 60 years, her sons Robert and Michael, her daughters Elisabeth Bourn (Grant) and Sheila, her granddaughter Hannah, her adopted son Rev. Paul Ugo Arinze, and by nephew Alec Mulgrew and niece Julie Mulgrew.
