Stoughton - Anna M. Sphar, age 92, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 23, 2017 at Agrace HospiceCare. She was born on February 8, 1925 in Buffalo Co. to Ben and Marit (Helstad) Hanson. She was baptized and confirmed at Lyster Lutheran Church in Nelson, Wisconsin. She graduated from Alma High School. She moved to Madison and worked for the State of Wisconsin for 30 years, primarily at Mendota Mental Health Institute but also at U.W. Genetics and Soil Science doing secretarial work and word processing. She married John Wineland in 1949 and he passed away in 1970. She later remarried in 1975 to Charles Sphar who also preceded her in death in 2003.
Anna was a member at Lakeview Lutheran for 48 years. After moving to Stoughton in 2003 she became a member of Christ Lutheran Church. She was also in Bethel Circle, Quilter Groups, and participating in the handiwork group at the Senior Center. She was very proud of her Norwegian heritage.
She is survived by her sister Alma Kohler; daughter-in-law Karen Wineland, granddaughters Anna Wineland and Laura (Reno) Fernandez; stepson Dean Sphar; stepdaughters, Rebecca Pieper, Mary (Greg) Onsager; step grandchildren, Danielle and Jason Sphar, Christine and Mark Pieper, Kimberly Onsager, Robyn and David Allen; 5 great grandchildren; 3 step great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, son Charles Wineland, stepdaughter Kathleen Allen; 2 brothers, and seven sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday November 28, 2017 at Christ Lutheran Church, 700 County Road B., Stoughton. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of services at church. Family and friends are invited to a meal following the services. She will be laid to rest at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Memorials may be made out to Christ Lutheran Church or Lakeview Lutheran Church.
