Amy Albert

September 5, 1920 — November 11, 2014

Amy Jane Albert (AJ, Munga, Grams) passed peacefully in the early morning hours of November 11, 2014. She was 94 years old and had raged many years "against the dying of the light".

Amy was born September 5, 1920 in Port Costa, California. She was the daughter of William Jackson Young and Amy Francis Russell. Her only sibling, Henry Francis, died in early childhood.

Amy married her one true love, Lewis Holland Albert (Al), and together they raised four sons: William Russell Albert (Jane), Peter Holland Albert (Susan), Lewis Tennant Albert and Grayson Phillip Albert (Laura Castanos). Amy lived to see the birth of three grandchildren - McKinley Albert (Grimmer), Logan Albert and Katy Albert - and three great grandchildren - Owen, Sam and Kayla.

Amy spent her last years at Oakwood Village (West) - Convenant Oaks and Hebron Oaks - and the family would like to express their deepest gratitude to all the staff who made Amy feel at home. To those many good people, we sincerely thank you. We also give thanks to the caring people from Agrace Hospice Care.

Amy received a nursing degree from the University of California Berkeley and after moving to Milwaukee in 1956, she worked for the Visiting Nurses Association and ended her career as a Psychiatric nurse and supervisor. Amy and Al lived many years in North Lake and Stone Bank (Waukesha County) before Amy moved to Madison in 1977 after the death of Al.

Amy never quite left her California roots behind as her family were early settlers and had a "Century Ranch'' outside of Merced. She told stories of her father's side (Irish) sailing around Horn to reach California and her mother's side coming from Texas in a covered wagon.

Amy was politically involved in many issues over the years, in particular, the civil rights movement in Milwaukee in the 60's and 70's. She was also an avid tennis player and master bridge player. She volunteered for numerous local organizations. After Al died, she traveled the world with her dear friend Marcia Barrabee and Gretchen Peterson Tours.

Amy is free to roam again.
