MADISON
Amanda Jane Doherty began this month with a new life in her heavenly home, passing away on April 1, 2016, at Capitol Lakes Health Center, at the age of 94. She was born on July 2, 1921, at the family farm in Wyocena, WI, to Warren and Alice (Simmons) Allen. Because her mother died when Amanda was only 11 months old, she was raised by grandparents Melvin and Amanda Simmons and other caring family. She has long awaited the joy of being with her mother again. She was valedictorian of her class at Pardeeville High School and also a graduate of Madison Business College. She met her husband, J. (James) Roger Doherty, while working for Selective Service, and they were married on August 8, 1942, in Doylestown, WI. After daughters Alice Jean and Kathy were born, her love for reading led to great success entering "jingle" and "25 words-or-less" contests, often winning whatever they needed next - two washers, a dryer, stove, TV, organ - even a year's diaper service when Kathy was born. She served as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader and was a faithful fan of all her children and grandchildren's activities. She was especially proud that she and Roger were recipients of the Columbia County Conservation Award for their wildlife pond and tree stewardship, planting over 8000 trees on his family farm. She created for her family the fun of celebrating every holiday and season, from cap gun "Reveille" in the stairway on the 4th of July, to green mashed potatoes on St. Patrick's Day when her interest in genealogy led to finding an Irish root of her own. She is survived by daughters Alice Jean Hampton and Kathryn Jane Kleckner, grandchildren Jim (Veronica) Kleckner, Mandy Hampton, and Kevin Hampton (fiance Brittany Strobel), and great-grandsons Liam and Aidan Kleckner, as well as her homecare family Julie McDonald and daughters Laini, Stella, and Rowena. She is also survived by her brother Orlan (Beryl) Allen, sister-in-law Velda Allen, and double-first-cousin Charles Simmons. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, stepmother Mary, brother Roger (Glea) Allen, half-sister Janette (Howard) Sampson, half-brother Merwin Allen, brothers-and-sisters-in-law W. Byron (Martha) Doherty, J. Aaron Doherty, and E. Raphael (Yvonne) Doherty, and son-in-law Terry Hampton.
Visitation will be on Tuesday April 5, 2016 from 4-7pm, at Cress Funeral Home, 3610 Speedway Rd, Madison. A funeral service will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 6th at 11:30am at Cress, with visitation one hour prior to the service and luncheon directly after. Burial will follow at St. Patrick's Church Cemetery in Doylestown, WI. In the ecumenical spirit in which she lived, memorials would be appreciated to Wyocena Community Church or to Our Lady Queen of Peace School Endowment Fund.
Blessed are they who plant trees under whose shade they know they may never sit. They give hope and memories to those they love and leave behind.
Please share your memories of Amanda.
