Alyce Sherry
Duckwitz
August 15, 1927 – April 21, 2026
Alyce Sherry Duckwitz, age 98 of Madison, Wisconsin, passed away at home on Tuesday, April 21, 2026. Born in Sauk City, on August 15,1927, she was the youngest of eight children of the late John Carr, and Lucille (Johnson) Carr.
Alyce grew up in Middleton, Wisconsin. She started grade school in a one-room school house in Middleton, and then went on to Middleton High School. In her teens, she had various jobs, including washing dishes at the Cuba Club where her mother worked, and later worked at the A&P grocery store on University Avenue, in Madison.
Alyce married Albert J. Duckwitz on May 7, 1948 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Parish. The celebrant was Father Francis L. McDonnell. Alyce and Al were married 71 years, until Al's passing in 2019. They had 11 children.
Alyce and Al were charter members of Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, in Madison.
Alyce and Al traveled to Florida, California, Oklahoma, and Canada. She especially enjoyed sailing with Al on Lake Mendota. She loved listening and dancing to Big Band music. Alyce was a wonderful homemaker. She was an excellent cook, preparing delicious meals, and always treated us to delicious cakes, cookies, and brownies to our delight.
Alyce is survived by 9 of her children: Michael, Sherry Garrett, Colleen, Patrick (Margaret), Nancy (John) Kurt, Peggy Lawinger, Jack, Sue Ellen (Gary) Nechuta and Kim Marie (Donald) Day. She had 12 grandchildren: Jeffrey (Carla) Eral, Jerry (Kim) Kurt, Jaclyn Eral, William (Iliana) Duckwitz, Holly (Peter) Meyer, Kathryn (Barton) Schubert, Lauren (Kevin) McMahon, Lindsey Nechuta, Matthew Day, Derek Lawinger, Aaron (Serina) Nechuta, and Dylan Lawinger (fiancee Alexa Conners). She is also survived by 1O great-grandchildren: Henry Eral, Oliver Eral, Patrick Schubert, Jeffrey Eral, Jr., Ella Kurt, Conor McMahon, Isabel Duckwitz, Remi Mae Nechuta, Kayleigh McMahon, and Landon Duckwitz.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her four brothers, and three sisters; her daughters Kathleen and Kelly; and sons-in-law, Fred Lawinger and Kenny Garrett.
Private family services and internment will be held at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery.
