MADISON- Alma Purmalis Dambekaln, age 98, passed away peacefully at her home in Madison on Sunday, June 11th, 2017, two days short of her 99th birthday. Alma was born in 1918, in Riga, Latvia. While attending the University of Latvia in Riga, she met her future husband Paul. They were married in Riga in 1939 and stayed together for 67 years until his passing in 2006. They were forced to flee Latvia in 1944 due to the Soviet occupation of their country. Following the war, the family spent five years in a Displaced Persons camp in Kempten, Germany. They immigrated and arrived in the United States in 1949 and eventually found their home in Wisconsin. While raising four children, Alma worked as an office manager for 37 years with Mautz Paint Company. In retirement she enjoyed gardening, swimming, cross country skiing, walking at West Town Mall, and visiting with her grand-children. She was a member of Midvale Lutheran Church since 1954.
Alma is survived by son Maris (Mary) of Colgate, Wisconsin, son Andris (Donna) of Virginia Beach, Virginia, daughter Inara and son Aivars both of Madison, two grandsons Martin (Joyce) and Jason (Erika), two grand-daughters Susan (Michael) Underhill and Andrea (David) Zajac, and 6 great-grandchildren, Paul, Mara, Luke, Julia, Matthew, and Nathan.
Funeral services will be held, Thursday, June 15, 2017, at 11:00a.m. at Midvale Community Lutheran Church, 43129 Tokay Blvd, Madison, Wi, with Pastor Larry Pinnow. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery following the funeral service. Please send memorials to the Midvale Community Lutheran Church.
