Alfred Karls

WAUNAKEE-Alfred F. Karls, age 89, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 23, 2015, at the Waunakee Manor Health Care Center. He was born on March 4, 1926, at home in Waunakee to George and Elizabeth (Hellenbrand) Karls. He married Mary Ann Irene Ballweg on June 5, 1951, at St. Aloysius in Sauk City. Alfred "Red" lived and farmed all of his life in Waunakee. Upon his retirement from farming, he worked part time for the Waunakee Canning Company. Once he "officially" retired, he and Mary Ann enjoyed fishing by the Merrimac Ferry as well as at Okee. Playing cards and picking raspberries with friends also occupied his time. On his daily walks in the country, he also enjoyed hunting and finding golf balls at the local golf course which he gave to the children to use. But his greatest joy was spending time with Mary Ann, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His faith in God and church were also a precious gift to him.

Survivors include his wife Mary Ann; children, Michael, David (Annie), Alan (Terri), Herbert (Rose), Raymond (Sheila), Vincent (Nancy), Paul (Diana), and Donna (Russ) Nath; 24 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren on the way; a brother, Edmund (Virginia); and sisters, Genevieve Greiber, Elizabeth Laufenberg and Lucille Endres. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter-in-law, Donna; a brother, George; and a sister, Helen Niesen and brothers-in-law, Lawrence Niesen, Herman Greiber, Herbert Laufenberg, and Donald Endres.

A Memorial service will be held on Monday, June 29, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at St John's Catholic Church 209 South St., Waunakee. Friends may call at the church on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services. Burial will take place in the church cemetery.

The family wishes to thank the entire staff at the Waunakee Manor and St Jude's Hospice for the wonderful care provided to their father. A special thanks goes to Monsignor Gunn and Father Jim for all their faith, caring and support.
