Alan W. Selene, age 76, of McFarland, WI, passed away peacefully on June 25, following a brief illness, related to long-term health challenges.
Alan was born May 2, 1950 in Des Moines, Iowa to Werner F. Selene and Lois A. Selene (Halferty). The family moved to Hampton in 1954. Alan graduated Hampton Community High School in 1968 and attended Drake University, graduating in 1972 with a BA in Religion. On moving back to Hampton in 1980 he began working for Selene Insurance Agency and in 1986, co-established the partnership of Selene-Sackville Ltd. and, soon after, established Latimer Insurance Ltd.
While in Hampton, Alan served on the Franklin County Hospital board, Hampton Area Chamber of Commerce, Hampton Baseball Commission as President, manager of the 10-12-year-old Hampton Bambino Cardinals, was a member of the National Babe Ruth Umpire Association, and was a Licensed Foster Parent. Alan was an Eagle Scout in Troop 57, and a member of the Order of the Arrow.
Alan held the insurance designation of Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC), was a member of the Professional Insurance Agents of Iowa, and served as state President in 1993-1994. He was a member of Anchor Lodge #191 in Hampton, and a member and Past President of the Rotary Club of Hampton. He served as the Rotary District 5970 Governor in 2000-2001, which encompassed the northern one-half of Iowa.
On January 1, 2001 he married Mary Beth Growney and moved to Madison, WI in July 2001. He was a proud member and Past President of the Rotary Club of Madison South and remained active in Rotary at the local, district, and zone levels. He continued his professional career as the Corporate Administrator of Ryan Signs, Inc. until his retirement in 2024.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Dianna May and brother-in-law Stephen May, of Lincoln, NE, and his mother-in-law, Rita Ryan, of St. Paul, MN.
He is survived by his wife Mary Beth Growney Selene, daughters Jessica Selene, of Des Moines, IA, and Wendy Selene, step-daughter Bridget Hart and husband Sean Hart, of McFarland, WI, grandchildren Austin Mulford and Olivia Mulford, step-grandson Dexter Hart, two great-grandsons, Ryan family brothers, sister, and sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, many nieces and nephews, and cherished friends worldwide.
A celebration of Alan’s life will be held on Saturday, July 25, from 1:00-4:00 pm at Cress Funeral Home, 3610 Speedway Rd, Madison, WI 53705.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial donations to the Rotary Club of Madison South Foundation or, The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.
