Irwin, Aileen Ruth Slocumb
Madison: Aileen Ruth Slocumb Irwin, age 89, entered the Glory of God at Agrace Hospice on March 10, 2015.
Aileen was born September 23, 1925 to Ira Otis and Anita Ida Kuechenmeister Slocumb in Menomonie, Wisconsin. Aileen graduated from Menomonie High School in 1943. She attended U of W-Madison from 1943-46 and then earned a Dietetics degree from U of W-Stout in 1948 (Phi Upsilon Omicron, Philomatheans, Intersociety Council) and a Master of Science degree in 1949 from University of Iowa (Omicron Nu).
She was a therapeutic dietitian at Luther Hospital in Eau Claire in 1949. On July 15, 1950, she was married in the Menomonie EUB Church to William Duffield Irwin, in DeWitt, Iowa.
She taught diet therapy and nutrition classes for nursing students at Jane Lamb Hospital in Clinton, Iowa in 1952-53. When Bill died suddenly in 1962, she moved to Madison, Wisconsin at the age of 37 years to raise their sons. Aileen was very dedicated to her sisters and friends in PEO. She was a member for 60 years. She was a church member all her life. She served in the United Methodist Church preparing communion feast and Meals on Wheels.
She was a member of the American Dietetic Association for 40 years. She belonged to Madison and Wisconsin Dietetic Associations and volunteered for Dial a Dietitian. She volunteered at Sunny Hill Nursing Home.
She worked at Madison General Hospital as a therapeutic dietitian in 1963. In 1965, she was employed as clinical/renal dietitian full time at William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital until retirement in 1989. She was very loyal to the hospital, personnel, and work.
Her Nieces and nephews who lived a block away depended on her loyal presence and help.
"Ask Aunt Aileen." She leaves a great hole in our lives.
Aileen's interests were her family, travel, PEO, church, her hometown, Lawrence Welk, and the wonderful people with whom she worked at Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital.
Her sons Robert (Karen) Irwin and Steven Charles Irwin survive. Other are grandsons, Riley Irwin and Reese Irwin. She is survived by a brother, Dr. Charles (Alanna) Slocumb of Modesto, California and a sister, Natalie Anita Slocumb Witte. Many cousins, nieces, and nephews survive and will join you to celebrate her life at 6101 University Avenue. She will be buried in Elmwood Cemetery in DeWitt, Iowa next to her husband.
A celebration of life for Aileen Ruth Slocumb Irwin will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at Asbury United Methodist Church, 6101 University Ave., Madison, WI.
