A.D. Anderson

MADISON - Dr. A.D. Anderson passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday Oct. 13, 2015. He was born Oct. 11, 1918 in Gilmington, WI. the son of the late Andrew and Christine (Grass) Anderson. A.D. grew up on a farm and put himself through River Falls State University before attending the University Of Wisconsin Medical School to become a doctor and a surgeon. He proudly served his country in WWII in the Army serving in Okinawa as Chief of the Surgical Service. In 1948, Dr. Anderson entered the University Of Minnesota Graduate School Of Medicine and earned a Master of Science Degree in Surgery. A.D. married Phyllis Sue Schwingel on April 12, 1945 in Chicago, IL. He is also past Grand Master of Masons in Wisconsin and 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason, and a member of the Zor Shrine.
A retired surgeon and former Chief of Staff at Madison General Hospital, Dr. A.D. Anderson built an equally impressive second career as a volunteer fundraiser, philanthropist, and board member for numerous non-profit organizations in the greater Madison area including the Children's Dyslexia Center-Madison and Bethel Lutheran Church. He was a charter member of the board of the Children's Dyslexia Center-Madison since 2001. He was recently instrumental in the formation of a long-term partnership to train teachers for local public schools in research-based tutoring methods. When Bethel Lutheran Church experienced unprecedented growth in the 1990's due to new gifts and tremendous investment gains, A.D. stepped up to the plate. He helped organize the growth and keep the Bethel Lutheran Church Endowment Foundation's financial development work running smoothly.
Dr. Anderson is survived by his wife of 70 years Phyllis; son Andrew (Diane) Anderson; daughter Kristen (Kevin) Shea; 7 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday November 28, 2015 at BETHEL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 312 Wisconsin Ave. Madison with Rev. John O. Swanson presiding. A visitation will be from 10:00 AM until the time of the service on Saturday at church.
